SanversUnited is a collective of fans passionate about making a difference. We promote fundraising for True Colors United, an organization which helps homeless LGBTQ+ youth, in the name of Maggie Sawyer and Sanvers. Click here to learn more about our fundraising efforts.
In the United States alone, it is estimated that of the 1.6 million homeless youth, 40 percent identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. LGBTQ+ youth are 120 percent more likely to experience homelessness than their straight, cisgender peers*. Many of these children — and it is important to remember that these are children, with dreams and aspirations — are forced into homelessness by their own families because of their identities.
Detective Maggie Sawyer is one of these kids.
When Maggie Sawyer first graced our screens in 2016, she was the representation that so many of us longed for. An out, proud gay woman who has grown stronger and braver in the face of adversity.
Maggie Sawyer was kicked out of her home when she was 14 after she was unfairly outed as a lesbian to her parents. She endured homophobia and prejudice from a young age. Her story reflects the experiences of far too many LGBTQ+ people.
Her beautiful love story with Alex Danvers captured our hearts and taught audiences that no matter what, you are deserving and worthy of love, respect and a safe environment to be your true self. Although our time with Maggie and Sanvers wasn’t nearly long enough, the strength and courage her story showed us is something that deserves to be celebrated and continued for years to come. We decided to turn our pain and frustration into something that would make a difference.
That’s why we’ve created SanversUnited.
Our Logo
Logo and description by Ray (@smol_sawyer)
The logo of the hashtag and heart was born from Floriana Lima’s tweets and online interactions with fans. It symbolizes the idea of “spreading love”.
Understanding, compassion, and love is so desperately needed in this world in order for us to reach a place of global equality. The LGBTQ+ pride flag is incorporated into the design but is shown in fragments. I wanted this to represent the many shades, faces, pieces, and stories that come together to make up our community. We are all different and should be celebrated for our individuality. We believe that the world should be a place where all the Maggie Sawyers out there know they are loved and accepted as themselves.
